If you are interested in submitting for the A&R showcase here is the info
To submit you must bring the following to the KZND studios (between the hours of 8am and 5pm) before March 1st, 2012 and then at least one member of the band must be at the Homegrown meeting at Alaska Music and Sound on March 3rd at 4pm. We will announce the 10 bands and then draw for the order of performance at that time.
- We need a professional press kit. (You will be judged by the selection panel on this so make sure it's quality. This kit represents your product so make it shine)
- In The press kit you should include Band Bio, Professional Band Press Photo, Stage Plot, and Contact Information. If you would like to see a example we made of a professional press kit click here.
- There should also be a cd of your best two or three songs. Try to make these as professional as possible. We are not focusing totally on the production value, we are more focused on the music...that being said we also want to see that you care enough about your product that you have spent the time, money and effort in a studio.
- Please try to keep your press kit as professional as possible but at the same time not bulky. Trust us, the last thing an A&R rep wants is a binder full of smoke being blown up their butts. Keep it simple and clean.
- We also ask for a $200 submission fee to participate. We know that sounds like a lot of money but this money goes to pay for the expenses of flying up the A&R reps, housing them, and paying for things like a photographer and videographer. We do not make any money off of your submission fees. It's also a way to show us that you are serious about this. We want the best ten bands on that stage to represent Alaska. If you can't afford $200 then you are might not ready for this. Bands in the lower 48 can sometimes spend thousands of dollars for this opportunity or have to go through "battle of the band" type experiences. We don't make you do that because we feel it is counterproductive to what the music scene should be about. If you are not chosen for this showcase you will be refunded your $200 submission fee.
That's all you need to submit for the showcase. Just know that the sooner you get it in the better because are selection process is the first 10 bands that we choose are in. So if 10 bands drop off 10 quality press kits those will be the 10 that will be in on the showcase. Even if band 11 is better it will be too late and they will be out of luck.
UNDERAGE BANDS:
Underage bands are allowed to submit and we will allow the first 3 slots for them. But if 10 bands that are over 21 turn in their press kits before hand we will not hold the 3 slots. Any underage band chosen for the showcase, each band member must have ID and have a parent (with the same last name on their ID) or a legal guardian with proper paperwork. There is zero wiggle room on this so don't ask. The underage bands that are chosen to play must show up with parent/guardian at load in and then leave until 15 minutes before there set time. They must all stay together in a designated spot and never be less then arms length from their parent of guardian. Breaking of these rules will be cause for the band to get kicked off the bill with no refund. After the band plays they may pack up their gear and leave.
HOW THE SHOWCASE IS RUN:
If your band is chosen to play the showcase then you will be called to a meeting to go over details but here is the basic run down.
There will be 10 bands playing that night so it's going to be a tight ship. Chilkoot Charlies has given us the main stage on a Friday night to do this so it is important that you promote this show like you have never promoted a show before. WE RUN ON TIME on this show...we set the lineup and we stick to it. You will have a total of :15 minutes or 3 songs to show them what you've got. If your three songs is only eight minutes long then that is what you should play. Just make the best of the best material you have. If you are submitting you should think about setting aside a part of your practice time to go over that set now.
Your band is expected to be at the show from the time it starts until the time it's over. This show is about the musical community...not just your band. There are no Rockstars allowed at this. If you can't commit to that then don't submit.
We will start the show at 9pm and go until it's over. There will be 15 minute set times and 15 minute set change times. We will all help each other on and off stage. After 5 bands we will take a :30 minute break so the reps can stretch their legs and eat or whatever. We will resume the show after the break and stay on schedule. If your set goes over 15 minutes we will turn off sound and you will look foolish. We haven't had to do that during the last ones we've done and I'm sure we won't have to on this one put it has to be put out there.
While you are performing the A&R reps will be giving you evaluations based on a list of questions we have given them. This is why you are doing this showcase. For that evaluation,,Sure we would love for you to get signed but the reality is that is not going to happen right away. You are doing this to get those three evaluations from people in the industry who know what you they are talking about and will give you honest feedback (sometimes brutally honest).
You will also be recorded during your set. You will get a copy of this on DVD and the A&R representatives will get a copy to take back with them. On top of that copies will be send to a number of other industry people who weren't able to come up but want to see what we've got.
You will receive the evaluations within a week and the DVD as soon as it's finished being produced.
That's about it...If you have any questions you can email both Fatguy or Sarah from Family Tree Presents.
